Birmingham was founded in 1871. Hailed as the "Pittsburgh" of the south for it's industrial steel and iron works, Birmingham grew rapidly earning the moniker of "The Magic City". Today, Birmingham has become one of the top banking cities of the United States, home at one time to two of the largest banking institutions, Regions and SouthTrust banks.
Birmingham is estimated at having a population of close to 230,000 residents. Yet, when you add in the major suburbs like Hoover, the population explodes to over 1 million residents living in the Birmingham metro area. This accounts for close to 1/4 of the population of Alabama.
Rich in history, Birmingham is home to the Civil Rights Museum. Visiting the musuem is an eye opening event for people that may not be familiar with the struggles of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Other historic places in Birmingham includes, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Site, Southern Museum of Flight, 16th Street Baptist Church, Vuclan Park, and Tannehill State Historic Site.

Living in Birmingham
Birmingham is a great city! The climate is not too harsh, either cold nor hot. (There are exceptions!) The people are kind, caring, and friendly. There is plenty of things to do for residents of all ages, single, married, with children or without. Although Birmingham does not have the lure of Atlanta or the twinkle of Nashville, Birmingham shines in its own capacity as a city that's real, full of real people, working to make their city a better place.
